A League City, TX gym or studio can look to banks, credit unions, SBA-backed lenders and equipment vendors' finance programs, or send one request through Brookway Finance to funding partners. Equipment financing fits racks, rowers and modular flooring; a term loan can fit movable studio equipment. Fixed floor construction is excluded. Partners review the membership numbers and decide.
A Brookway Finance article on financing gym equipment and a larger floor in League City, Texas.
Where to find a loan for a gym business and what it covers
A gym asks for money for three different things, and each points to a different source. Machines and modular flooring are collateral, so equipment financing, including the finance programs some equipment makers run, fits them. A bigger space or second studio can add movable equipment and rent, which can be reviewed for a term loan; fixed construction is excluded. Annual insurance bills and gaps between member payments are working capital, which a credit line handles.
Brookway Finance is one more route: a single request goes to funding partners with different products, so the owner does not have to file the same papers several times. For a second opinion on the plan itself, a small business development center adviser can go over the membership projections with the owner before the request goes out. The gym financing page sets out the requirements partners look at.
The trade is a mix of sizes. Galveston County, TX counted 34 fitness and recreational sports centers with employees in 2023 (County Business Patterns, NAICS 713940), with 664 paid employees, or about 19.5 per location on our arithmetic, though 41.2% of them had fewer than five. Separately, the 2023 ZIP Code Business Patterns list 13 centers of this kind with a ZIP 77573 address. The 2024 Nonemployer Statistics count of 238 in the county is for the wider other amusement and recreation group (NAICS 7139), so it is broader than fitness alone.
Equipment loans for racks, rowers and modular flooring
Equipment financing for a gym reads cleanly when every item is listed with its quote, because the term can follow each item's life: a power rack outlasts a rower's monitor, and movable rubber mats can be replaced in sections as they wear.
| Item | Quantity | Price each | Line total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power racks | 6 | $2,400 | $14,400 |
| Rowing machines | 8 | $1,150 | $9,200 |
| Movable rubber matting (sq ft) | 3,200 | $4.10 | $13,120 |
| Dumbbell set with racks | 1 | $6,800 | $6,800 |
| Total | $43,520 |
At 10.5% annually, the illustrative $43,520 package has 48 installments of $1,114.26 and $9,964 in interest. Used racks and plates can lower the amount; a partner may set a shorter term for them.
Term loans for movable studio equipment or a second studio
Moving to a larger floor or opening a second studio adds two costs at once: movable equipment and a higher rent. Illustration only, invented figures: a $148,000 movable-equipment package on a term loan over 84 months at 11% costs $2,534.12 a month, and the new lease costs $3,100 a month more than the old one. Fixed construction is excluded.
Together with the equipment payment above, that is $6,748.38 a month of new fixed cost. At $54 a month in dues, the gym needs about 125 more paying members just to cover it, on our arithmetic, before counting staff for the extra hours. That is the number to compare with the space's realistic sign-up pace.
A line of credit can sit beside the term loan for the months between the opening and the point where new memberships catch up. Draw on it only for that gap, and pay it down as dues grow.
How lenders read membership revenue: notes for League City, TX owners
Membership revenue looks steady on a statement, but a partner reads it for what it hides. Illustration only, invented figures: 380 members at $54 a month bill $20,520. If 4.0% cancel each month, about 15 members leave every month and must be replaced just to stand still. In this example the new fixed cost is 32.9% of current monthly dues.
The records that answer those questions:
- Twelve months of billing reports showing active members, new joins and cancellations by month.
- Prepaid annual memberships shown separately, since that cash covers months not yet delivered.
- Personal training, class packs and retail sales split out from dues.
- The current lease and, for a move, the new lease terms and the supplier quote for movable equipment.
